Greetings all from Down Under! I have an odd question...I've just made myself some 'poi' handles, and I want to get into a bit of flagging.

Now I have plenty of silk, I just want to know where I get the ultra fluorescent dyes? I want to make a pair or two for fun, and would love to play with some of the fluoro dyes to make them look awesome!

This tribe is awesome- I've learned stuff already!
Blessings for the New Year!

flaggers in Hawaii??

HI there! I am going to Hawaii for May and June - Big Island - and am wondering if anyone knows of any flaggers/teachers/flag makers that I can get come flags from and hopefully a lesson or two. Would love to learn how to use them, and where I'm from (Victoria), there aren't any flaggers around. So, I figure the chance to meet some in Hawaii is good. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Flagging Folsom Street Weekend – Real Bad

Attention Flaggers and all Flow Performers

I wanted to be sure, for those of you coming to SF for Folsom Street weekend, and those of you attending many of the dance events, that you bring your flags and flow toys with you.

There will be an opportunity to Flag at Real Bad at Club 1015 on Sunday night, the party immediately following the street fair (www.realbad.org). The black light stage will be open from the start of the event until 10PM. The stage will close at 10PM to accommodate the very large crowds anticipated at the event. However, this year, the stage will re-open at about 2:30AM (depending on the crowds) to flaggers and flow performers, and will remain open until the end of the event. This is something new, and I hope it will make all of you happy to have an opportunity to get back up and enjoy the stage through the end of the event.

See you on the dance floor.

Any flaggers in Sac?

Hey, I'm Bo. I'm a fusion bellydancer, and I recently met my first flagger - also a bellydancer. She came from Florida to stay and take classes at the studio I go to for a while. Her flagging blew me away! I've always enjoyed watching poi, fire, staff, etc., but when I saw flagging I thought, I gotta try that. She let me play with her flags a bit, but then she moved on, and now... I'm sort of at a loss.

I tried making a set given her rough description, but after reading up on them in this Tribe and at Flagger Central, I can see that I didn't do it right - wrong fabric, wrong positioning of weights. And I'm also curious as to just how to learn how to do this. I can do some of the poi tricks I know, but so far, that's it, and not all of them seem to work with flags.

Anyone else in Sac? Any advice for a flagger on her own?

---Hey flaggers. I am coming to NY on 12/8 and leaving on the 15th. That means I have at least one weekend and several nights to hit the town and flag, and you can bet I will have my flags with me. So, let me know - any special events going on? I would love to be part of the scene for the week and let my silks flow for fun.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

things have been slow on this tribe, but i always like to connect w/other flaggers, so...

what's new? what's new in your dance, in your fabric, in your community, in your perspective?

me: i'm nursing a rotator cuff injury, so not much flagging, but am doing shoulder exercises so i can flag for a community show/event next month.

what's new with you?

Hi there, new to the tribe, but *quite* happy that I found something like this that exists. I've danced with fans, and LOVE IT, but I can't find *anywhere* on the 'net plans on how to make some of my own. I got a quick-and-dirty explanation/lesson years ago, but when I tried to implement thtose ideas, I found my memory lacking, and I created a monster. So, anyone know where or who has step-by-step instructions on how to build fans? Thanks!

transporting/storing your flags at a party

hi everyone
not to repeat the subject but::
how do you like to take your flags to a party?

for me it varies as a function of what kind of party it is. if it's a allnight psyfamily type event then i'll haul around a backpack loaded with multiple sets of flag/poi/water/gum etc. if its a club then i usually take 1 set of flags and store them in cargo pockets. i started thinking about developing something, last night we had fire practice then i stuck my fire poi and flags in the same backpack. ick, the flags picked up a tiny bit of whitegas/burny stench. it's gone away but i want to take a little better care of my flaggage than that.

anyone have great ideas for this? peace
sweat + wind + flags == hard spinning!!

i've read somewhere (probably spintribe) that polychina silk is really good for spinning when your sweaty. can anyone verify this?

i was recently at a party and was pretty sweaty while spinning. the silk kept grabbing on the sweaty skin and sticking a little bit. not really a problem with the smaller flags but the bigger flags could get enough surface area to really drag and mess up the flow momentarily. i still absolutely love the habotai, it's what i started with and have played alot with.

if it was indoors with little wind this would not be a problem, this was a outdoor party with intermittent wind that kept bursting up at odd times.

peace!!

got (black)light?

hi!

i was curious as to what everyone does for blacklights at the house.

practicing with the flags is definetly fun anytime, but it gets magical with some good even UV illumination. heres a explanations as to how the process of UV reactance happens. Or, what makes 'em pop soo gooood!

http://www.glowshop.com/glowshopsite/glowshop/GS_what_is_uv.html

so i have a couple of the walmart 3' flourescent fixtures mounted in a single wooden box for outdoor use. these work pretty good, they have a removable plexiglass cover for transporting the lights safely.
i've noticed that by far the optimal situation is have multiple light sources so you can get both sides of the flags lit up.

i've also been playing with some UV led's. these are promising, they throw pretty far. the main problem with them is the small beamwidth of the led. this means they really need to be clustered and placed at differing angles to get any kind of even coverage. i would like to make some braceletes that have a couple of these led's in them to wear while flagging. that's atleast worth a try.

theres a bunch of places that sell the led's online, look for high current types (30+ mA) if possible.

i'll post pictures of such led bracelets if they work out positively. otherwise you'll never hear about _that_ again.. ; )

hi everybody, i wanted to let yall know that the on-going sale at http://www.tamingfire.com/catalog/ will be coming to an end 2/06/05.

we're currently offering discounts on our silk and PCS flag sets. check out our selection, we can work with you on designing custom PCS sets. i'm a active flagger here in central texas, i've created a number of badass PCS flags for friends in the austin area. i've really grown to love the PCS (poly china silk, sorry) ( i'm also fond of FLA and TLA's) (FLA=four letter acronym, TLA=.....three letter acronym!) fabric. it's super durable, so vibrant, consistent color fields across the fabric. the UV reactive colors hit so hard you won't believe its legal. seriously, the orange looks like it's on fire. we're offering a huge variety of colors, here's the link directly to the colors we can order:
http://www.tamingfire.com/catalog/product_pages/pcs-colors.html

*** finally!!! ***

we took some time yesterday and shot a couple flagging freestyle videos as well as tutorial loops. those will be coming online within the next few weeks. yesterday Leif did a huge update and placed 9 new fire/glow videos online at www.tamingfire.com.

peace yall

Poi Tutorials - As Prommised

Guys thanks for the patience with me as I finished these up. I will be trying to redo a few of the vids in the future as some people are expressing that there is difficulty in seeing the poi ends within the videos. Give us a little longer and we will be finishing up on the flag tutorials too. Here you go guys! http://www.tamingfire.com/tutorials.html

Tutorial Announcement as to Appear Elsewhere
------------------------------------------------------
Taming Fire is proud to release a full free set of what we consider intermediate to advanced poi video tutorials. There are currently 20 particular moves, variations, and combinations provided. They have thumbnail examples of the execution of the move, text thoroughly explaining the dynamics and concepts of the move, and larger versions of the video provided for download (also provided in slow motion and occasionally from different angles).

The series is setup in a sequential fashion building on the concepts and principles founded in the tutorials before them. We have also added related categories showing you the move basis involved in the dynamics of each move, as well as a 5 star difficulty ranking scale to display the difficulty of each particular move. We have also indexed all of the quality online tutorial resources available elsewhere on the net, that we are aware of, for poi, staff, equipment development, and fire photography.

Are you interested? You can find them all at http://www.tamingfire.com/tutorials.html We hope that you find them to be a good resource which explains the moves and concepts in a clear and precise manner. Let us know what you think. And don’t forget to join the forum!

Regards,
Leif

what are other name options?

do any of you wash your flags? i don't have silk flags, but wonder about washing the poly china silk or other poly or nylon flags. would they shrink? or would the drapery weights get funky?

btw, i flagged at pridefest this weekend and met a few other flaggers. one of them used denim hems or something instead of drapery weights. the other was the youngest flagger i've ever met. maybe 8 or 10 years old. he was awesome. :)

hi everyone, i would love to see what kind of flags yall are playing with. Mine are all 8mm habotai (??) china silk, roughly 42*36, weighted on the heavy side (i've been told).

Where did you obtain yours from? Did you make them? any advice you would like to pass on to other would-be flag craftspeople?

i've made (8 pair) all of mine, given about half of those away to various folks. peace

hi all, i'm happy to be in this tribe and glad others have joined.
i don't do silk (have to kill the silkworms to make it) so i'm curious what fabrics besides silk others use. so far, my poly china "silk" seems to be the best as far as lightness but i have found various other materials, including nylon, which is not one i prefer.
also, i'm wondering if anyone has dyed their own non-silk fabrics and which ones work the best and with what kind of dye.

i love flagging//introduction

hi yall
like the subject title says, i love flagging! i first saw someone flagging in 99 at a midsize raveyrave in austin,tx. i was entranced, then didn't see anyone flagging for quite a while. a while after i got into poi, which has a big scene in austin btw, and that eventually led back to flagging. the centrifugal force site was the first thing i found on the internet. every aspect of this thing (sport? hobby? lifestyle? ) is positive. from the creation, to performance, teaching, watching other people use your flags.

i'm fixing (texas, right) to make some new sets, i'll be trying out some new style designs. namely the french serti technique for painting/dyeing silk. basically you put this stuff called 'gutta' on the silk, its a dye resist. you outline your shapes with the gutta then apply the dye everywhere else. how is this different from say tiedyeing? tiedye is primarily a vat dye process, this serti technicque gives you high (relatively) resolution painting capability on silk. you use dye to color with, the dye gets steamset into the silk. if you just try painting on silk the dye/paint tends to run very badly, it just spreads out as thin as it can, very low resolution. i'll post pictures when i'm done, the first set will be geometric/abstract explorations of the technicque for myself.
